Ocean Plastic, Wood Pulp and Herbs. Meet the Mattress That Made Its Debut in Unawatuna.

Hotels in Sri Lanka have spent years cutting back. Less water per guest. Smarter air conditioning. Solar panels on the roof. Refill stations instead of plastic bottles.
Then the guest goes to sleep on a mattress nobody thought twice about.
That gap is exactly why we brought the Valentino Italy Sustainable Mattress Collection to the 55th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Hospitality Graduates Association, held at the beach club of Araliya Beach Resort & Spa in Unawatuna. Valentino Italy introduced it as the first sustainable mattress collection in Sri Lanka and South Asia. And honestly, there was no better room to launch it in. Every person there runs, manages or supplies a hotel.
Why the SLHGA 55th AGM?
Fifty five AGMs is a milestone. The association brings together hospitality graduates who now sit in general manager offices, housekeeping departments and procurement desks across the island. These are the people who decide what goes on the bed in thousands of rooms.
“Not how a mattress looks in a showroom, but how it works when your team handles it fifty times a week.”
So we didn't just put up a banner. We set the mattresses out at the beach club, invited every participant to lie down and feel them, and then did something a little unusual for a launch. We made the bed.
With help from a friend in Araliya Beach's housekeeping team, we dressed one of the sustainable mattresses live, the way a room attendant would on any given morning. Mattress protector first. Then Valentino Italy premium bed linen. If you're a hotelier, that's the test that matters. Not how a mattress looks in a showroom, but how it works when your team handles it fifty times a week.

Shop The CollectionWhat's inside a sustainable mattress?
Three things you'd never expect to find in a bed.
Waste plastic from the ocean. Plastic pulled out of the sea is processed into fibres and given a second life inside the mattress. Every kilo that goes into a bed is a kilo that isn't washing up on a beach. For a hotel in Unawatuna, Mirissa or Bentota, that isn't an abstract idea. It's the view from the lobby.
Wood pulp. Plant based fibres made from wood pulp come from a renewable source. Trees grow back. Petroleum doesn't.
Natural herbal plants. Herbal materials bring a natural element into the sleep surface itself, replacing some of the synthetic content you'd find in a conventional mattress.
All of these materials are sustainably produced. That's the whole point. A mattress that's "green" on the label but ships its problems somewhere else isn't sustainable. It's just marketing.
Why should hotels care about mattresses at all?
Fair question. A mattress isn't the first thing anyone thinks of in a sustainability plan. I'd argue it should be in the top five.
Think about the numbers in your own property. A 100 room hotel has at least 100 mattresses, often more once you count extra beds and staff quarters. They're bulky. They're hard to recycle. When they reach the end of their life, most of them end up in a landfill or burned. Then the whole cycle starts again with new foam made from fossil based materials.
Choosing mattresses made from recovered and renewable materials changes that cycle at the start. Less virgin plastic. Less fossil fuel content. Less waste created in the first place. That's a direct cut to the carbon footprint of every room you sell, and it happens quietly, every single night, without asking guests to do anything.
There's a commercial side too, and I won't pretend there isn't. Travellers coming to Sri Lanka from Europe and Australia increasingly check a hotel's green credentials before they book. Tour operators ask about it. Eco certification programmes look at what you buy, not just how much electricity you use. A sustainable mattress is something you can actually show a guest, photograph for your website and write into your sustainability report. It's proof, not a promise.
And here's the bit people forget. Sustainability that hurts comfort doesn't last. If guests sleep badly, the mattress gets replaced early, which defeats the purpose. That's why this collection carries the same Valentino Italy standard of support and comfort as the rest of our range. Green and comfortable. You shouldn't have to pick one.
Dressing the bed: protector and cashmere cotton linen
Back to the bed we made at the beach club.
The mattress protector is jacquard material with a lamination underneath. That laminated layer is what stops spills, sweat and stains from soaking through into the mattress. For a hotel, this is where mattress life is won or lost. Protect the mattress properly and it lasts longer. A mattress that lasts longer is, quite simply, the most sustainable mattress there is.
On top went Valentino Italy premium bed linen, made from 100% cashmere cotton. Soft, breathable and built for the kind of daily laundering hotel linen goes through.
Put the three together and you've got a complete sleep system for a guest room. Sustainable mattress underneath. Laminated jacquard protection in the middle. Cashmere cotton on top.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Valentino Italy Sustainable Mattress Collection?
It's a mattress range made from waste ocean plastic, wood pulp and natural herbal plants, all sustainably produced. Valentino Italy introduced it as Sri Lanka's and South Asia's first sustainable mattress collection.
Where was the sustainable mattress collection launched?
At the 55th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Hospitality Graduates Association, held at the beach club of Araliya Beach Resort & Spa, Unawatuna, in Sri Lanka's Southern Province.
How does a sustainable mattress reduce a hotel's carbon footprint?
It uses recovered and renewable materials in place of virgin plastics and fossil based foam, which means less new plastic produced and less waste created. Paired with a proper mattress protector, it also lasts longer, so hotels replace mattresses less often.

Yes. It was launched specifically to the hospitality sector and is available to hotels, resorts and villas across Sri Lanka.
What bed linen does Valentino Italy offer for hotels?
